Dog - An Animal of Mystery and Enduring Abundance

The dog (Canis lupisculatus when regarded as a separate species or Canis familiaris if considered a subspecies of this wolf)is a domesticatedcarnivableof the large family canineovidae. It is probably the most common terrestrial carnivore, the second most common carnivore after the lion. It pre-dates man by about ten million years. It is known from fossils found in Europe, North America, and Asia. There are two subspecies: the domestic dog (C. Minnelli), and the wild dog (C. lycophorum).

The dog's physique appears to be that of a modern day equivalent to that of its ancestors, which are largely dog-sized. It has a short, dense muzzle, a high, slanted forehead, an under bite, a long neck, a thick under tail, and a thick forelegs. The dogs generally possess long ears, large paws, and webbed toes. A medium sized dog would stand just over seven feet tall at shoulders with a tail length of just over five feet.
Dogs were used in early man's form of hunting and protection. They have been used by tribal and early civilizations for tracking, locating, and following prey. They have also been used for herd protection, herding, and herding flocks. Owing to their intelligence, temperament, and adaptability, they are being used even by military organizations. A dog is an excellent companion and a faithful friend. It is a great tool for traveling and helps in carrying luggage, carrying supplies, performing tasks such as bathing or feeding animals, or even hunting.
